ICRS Meetings...

Every year, the ICRS organizes a meeting, which is open to both members and non-members of the society. The meetings cover every aspect of the endocannabinoid system and are a mix of poster and short (15 min) oral presentations. The meetings are particularly suitable for post-graduate students and post-doctoral scientists at the beginning of their careers, with a number of travel awards being made available to assist in their participation. They are encouraged to present both oral and poster communications, and prizes are awarded for the best presentations. Senior scientists from all fields of cannabinoid research are also present at the meetings, which are generally conducted over an intense, but informal, four day period in June and/or July.

Our meetings are proving increasingly popular. Indeed, there has been a dramatic increase in the attendance at ICRS meetings in recent years, from 194 participants (of which 46 were from outside of the USA) in 2000 to a peak of 392 participants (of which 153 were from outside of the USA) in 2004. This increase primarily reflects an increase in the number of researchers in the area of endocannabinoid physiology, biochemistry and pharmacology rather than in “traditional”, albeit important, areas such as drug abuse potential of cannabis, as the numbers of presentations shown to the right demonstrate. Both academic researchers and, increasingly, researchers from the pharmaceutical industry attend the meetings.
